Independent Study Project Ideas - something good from something bad?

My 12 year old son needs some ideas for his ISP. It is supposed to be about something good that came from something bad. My examples: MADD came from the tragedy of drunk driving, Amber Alerts came from a tragic abduction etc. They don't have to be like my examples, just follow the basic formula - it has to be about something good that came from something bad. AIDS research, inoculations, seat belts in cars, better security at airports, pasteurized milk, fluoridated water, government inspection of meat and other food products, anesthesia for surgical procedures, shatter proof glass, polio vaccine. The list is endless
