A personal statement is made up of three things in a one-page single-spaced essay:
First, begin with a personal narrative (a short biographical story) that tells something about you...a learning experience, a trip you took, or some other tale that lets them know about you without actually TELLING them.
Second, list a goal or two (not what you want to do as a job, but what you want to DO - something that a job will help you with). Examples would be to work with kids, to travel, to be financially secure, to work with computers, to have a large family, to experiment with things, to build things...
Finally end with how you plan to achieve those goals - most often the answer would include a college education to gain a career that will help you achieve those goals (that goal).
