Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

The artist drains the depths of their dreams and nightmares for hints about the next dragon to appear in human consciousness. This is called 'mining the subconscious.'

The dragon is usually exaggerated -- a grotesque monstrosity of our suppressed imaginations. Consequently, the dragon's appearance will change as people evolve and change.

Ask yourself: What is most horrible and dreadful to you?

Describe visually the absurd logical amplification of this vision, with all its claws, wrinkles, fangs, scales and flames, and you will have the dragon that you seek.

If you want to avoid reptiles, why not make your modern dragon more machine-like or robotic?

Beware: We almost never need to chase dragons, since they have an annoying habit of chasing us!
