Yes. But it may take the wisdom of age to grow out of it. When you are complete you can value others, especially those one loves, sufficiently to wish them well and enjoy their wellbeing as much as one's own. And you cannot be diminished by loss, even though the loss reduces your own world. I speak as one who has known the disease, long ago!
