Question:

Does this sentence make sense?

"and whence the battle at started". i want to stay and once the battle had started, but i would like to use whence because i like the sound of it, im just not sure if it has the correct meaning for the sentence.

The term "whence" is generally used as a description of "from where something has come". In your phrase, this word would not fit what I believe you're trying to convey to your reader. In my personal opinion, I would use "when" instead. Not only will you avoid coming off as trying to sound as if your vocab is stronger than it actually is, you'll avoid losing the meaning of your phrase. You could try rewording that particular part of the sentence to eliminate the problem. How about "After the start of the battle..." instead? Try working with it a little, you'll find something that'll be perfect sooner or later.
