Is it supposed to be based off of the Greek epic poems? If so, you can use some of their themes: respect, hospitality, devotion to the gods...
In the case of the Iliad and the Odyssey, they revolve around the Troan war (not so much the Odyssey, but if it wasn't for the war then Odysseus wouldn'thave been travelling).
If it's to be a modern day epic poem, then you can do soemthing about the war in Iraq or the conflict in Darfur...
For it to be an authentic epic poem, make sure it starts in the middle (in medias res).
