Well, our society doesn't focus on promoting art, unfortunately. We live in a world where most of the persons between 16 and 26 years old have never been to a theater or have never visited an arts gallery. Statistics show that our world doesn't need art, or, at least, pretends not to need it. And that, in my opinion, is very sad. In the last 10 years the television industry has developed and there are so many TV channels that show almost nothing interesting; and yet, we allow the mass-media to manipulate us and to create a huge gap in our conscience by making us give up art.
Anyway, your question was about the role of the art in a society, so I'll focus on giving that answer. First of all, art is a way of expressing one's feelings, of creating a beautiful "something" that enriches the others. It has been for centuries a way of manipulating masses and of manipulating the human conscience. The world of the art creates another reality and it makes us live in a parallel universe.
Literature, for example, is a refuge of our fantasy, is a way of becoming someone you've always wanted to become - for both the writer and the reader. Even though it has nothing to do with the real world, literature satisfies our need for fiction, for projecting our own individualities in fictional personalities, of becoming a character in the book we read. It has been scientifically proved that masses of people who haven't had the privilege of reading novels, of transforming themselves in fictional individualities have become emotional labile. That is why the great totalitarian rulers have failed in their way to greatness... because they restricted the reading sector and they forbid some really important novels and fictions, that are so meaningful for the readers, the people fought against them and demanded new rights.
I guess art has a major importance in our society, because it defines us as individuals and it makes us better persons.
