It is often the small things in life that make us feel like life is meaningfull. When I am old I know that I will look back on my life and realize that all the small things that I did for my children and husband that made me who I am. I will realize that all the things that I did in my neighborhood and community that truly made a significant difference in the lives of others. It is all the small comments and encouragements toward the students in my classroom that have made a difference to multiple children.
As far as my own happiness, some of the things that I love are as follows. My six year old step-daughter's laugh when I give her "kissy ears" because I know that is what makes me her mother. My 14 year old's incessant conversation with me at midnight when she cannot sleep. My husbands kiss every night when he walks through the door. My 19 year old's hug as soon as he walks through the door as he returns from college. My grandchild's glare as I talk to him gently. My 18 year old daughter's self-confidence in her mothering abilities which I know is due to my imperfect example. My mother's acceptance of my similarity to herself. My students' multiple cards of endearment every year that I teach. And finally, my practically twin sister's dependence on me for reassurance and guidance, and her sense of need when she is blue. And to a person with a mental disorder (nay, a brain disorder), these are MAJOR small things that give me joy in life.
