There are many types of Deer in the U. S.. Whitetail found coast to coast, smaller in the South than in the North. Blacktail, found in the North. The averageSouthern Whitetail, fully matured, weighs between 100 and 220 lbs. and stands at the front shoulders about 4ft. high. Norhern Deer are genetically much larger, around 150 to 300 lbs. They are brown in color, babies, called fawns, have white spots untill 2 mo. A male deer is called a buck and grows antlers on his head. A female deer is called a doe and is anterless. A healthy buck each year will add tines to his "rack" at the rate of two per year. However, this can depend on genetics, rainfall, food availability, and the hunting season. It is not unusual if all the variables are right for a very young buck to have a huge rack (antlers). A big rack on a buck is considered to be, measured from his left furthest tine, to his right furthest tine, at least 18inches;but they can get much bigger than that. (Think Santa's Reindeer). Females, or does, are always a little smaller than Bucks. They deliver 2 fawns at the end of Spring. Deer eat grass, berries, acorns, corn, tree leafs, etc. but not meat. Deer are basically defenseless. However, they are wild and can fight while standing on their hind legs, and swing their front legs at their enemy, engaging him with his cleft hoofs. They can cause a lot of damage using this method. A Buck can and will gord or stab his aggressor with his horns. Both methods can kill a human pretty quickly. Deer have the highest deveoped senses in the wild. They can see anything they are looking at instantly (you for instance) at any distance. They can smell a maze field 2 miles away. They can hear the snap of a twig with there large pointed ears easily at well over 100 yards. I think maybe for like, poetic purposes, you should keep in mind that to mankind deer are considered to be the most beautiful, gracefull, peaceful animals in the wild. They are most of all mystical and magical. I have sat in the woods many times thinking that I am by myself, when all of a sudden out of nowhere a beautiful Buck will be standing right in front of me eating, unaware of my precense or starring a hole thru me, bobbing his head up and down, pawing the ground, or snorting at me to try and get me to move. When a Whitetail runs away from you he/she will throw it's tail straight up in the air, hence the name. You can usually see this tail or flag untill a few minutes after dark. If there are a group of deer, you will always see the doe leading the way. Never the Buck. The Doe instinctively knows she risks the danger of an intruder or an agressor. She always protects the Buck. I would concentrate on your essay on the beauty of the deer. It's mysticism of sudden appearance. The fawns are real cute and always stick close to there mother. Deer are suceptible to man, mountain lions, eagles, cyotes, but they will put up a gallant fight, especially to protect their young. Any deer can easily jump a 7 ft. fence with ease. One of the neatest scenes in the woods is a deer drinking from a stream or pond. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
