He/she has knowlege of what the client wants or needs for the end product and the many intensive steps to get from square room with white walls to a spcae that can captivate and inspire an audience, even if it is only one patron of the gallery. If you are talking print... this is only gained by doing projects, figuring out what works best for THEM, by YOU. Always keep tour clients needs in mind and your art direction will be pointed in the right direction. Above all of that... you need to present many directions and let the cards fall as they will. Make it seem like they are making all of the descions but really you are guiding and nudging them to the best desicion.
