It's Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and he was an Italian Baroque era sculptor and painter, 1598-1680, famous recently for sculptures and paintings such as The Ecstacy of St. Teresa (mentioned in Angels and Demons by Dan Brown) and more famous for the sculpture David.
