As a published writer I would suggest that you write a story about something that you are most familiar with or something that you really love and enjoy. For characters try creating people in your story similar or composits of those whom you admire or who are very unusual and interesting in your real life. Formulating a "plot" is easy if you think of a funny ending (or mysterious ending) FIRST and then build your story from the end BACK to the start only giving enough information to keep the reader guessing. Then just reverse the plot and you have an interesting story that will cause your reader to want to finish what you have written. Write a rough draft and then read it yourself and that is the time to edit; removing what really doesn't contribute to your tale and embellishing certain parts to make the story more enjoyable.
