Do you think female directors show a better portrayal of REAL women than male directors do?

you would assume so, because they are women, but as i have watched the below films i am questioning this idea. special reference to the lead female role Ada in the 'The Piano' by Jane Campion and Charlotte in 'Lost in Tanslation' :)

Agreed. Especially for film. The director has to think about the camera work, lighting, whether the set design works for the overall theme of the picture, where everyone is going to be moving behind the shot, etc etc etc.

A good actress is a good actress. Whether the director is Penny Marshall or Alan Smithee.
