Is it a good idea to shock people from time to time to wake them from their slumber?

I didn't word this one to well; it is in Arts & Humanities. I meant the metaphorical slumber of society in general - the lack of spirit, apathy, blind acceptance of continual injustice to minorities, etc. Should we shake them awake with words or deeds that really shock them?

If you want a smack in the nose, yes...
