Question:

Is this good for a first poem?

life is full of ups and downs
faces of smiles and frowns
dunno what life has in store for us
feels like you're riding on an empty bus
you gotta fight through all the pain
and try not to go insane
before you know it you'll find the someone
that'll make you feel not alone

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

Yes, it's unusually good. It reminds me of the poet, Langston Hughes. Be SURE to read him if your are not already familiar with his work. Here is my favorite Hughes poem, to show you what I mean by what kind of a poet you are:

I, Too

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

by Langston Hughes

Say, blah, I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but look at what I just found. It's an actual recording of Langston Hughes himself reading this poem aloud. Oh, my goodness. Be still my heart. All this new technology. I would have never thought I'd ever hear Langston Hughes himself, and just poof like that on this computer. I'm awfully moved right now. ANYWAY, here for your pleasure, is Mr. Langston Hughes himself, reciting his poem, "I, Too":(click on that red audio box to the left to make it play)
