Or is it only the educated who exercise them in thought.....?

Research in persuasion has pretty much proven that most people are more likely to be influenced by emotion rather than evidence. The likelihood that someone will be influenced by evidence (i.e., logic and reason) increases with education level.

So there's a correlation, not an absolute one.
