Question:

What is the function and purpose of ART in the world and human life?

Thanks for asking.

This is the question artists have been asking themselves for the past hundred years or so, at least in America and Europe. Art was once primarily for religious purposes. Those days are over.

Now we have the art of those like Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dal㭬 and Pablo Picasso to look at and wonder about. Moreover, we have Malevich, Jasper Johns, Lee Krasner, and Warhol. We've got abstract paintings without brushstrokes, monochromes using only one color, and works that test the definitions of painting and sculpture. We have performance pieces, sculptures produced in factories, animation, video, and music. All of these things are innovations in the sense that they are conscious rejections of 'old' art.

I think that artists as a whole have yet to reach a consensus on what art should do. I'm not sure that a consensus will ever be reached; instead, it seems that artists are freer than ever to do what they believe is important.

The purpose of art, then, has yet to be determined. We're still searching. Help us search. Make some art.

May God bless you.
