What was the original purpose of my miniature antique music stand?

I just purchased what looks like a miniature music stand from an antique shop. It is made of metal and painted gold; the back of the stand is decorated with lyres. It looks like there may have been a hook in the middle. Does anyone know what this might be?

I haven't seen your music stand, but it sounds like a portable music stand that attaches to a marching band instrument. The clip holds the pages so they don't blow away when the player is marching. These fit many instruments.
