Question:

Defining gothic traditions today?

I'm working on some American lit. questions, and one of them asks if I would consider Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" a prime example of American Gothic literature, and of course I answered 'yes', seeing as it features darkness, madness, secrets, and duplicity, as well as including witches and the Devil as characters. However, it is the second part of the question that has me stumped.

What do we use to define gothic traditions today?

I mean, should I give examples of the "gothic" fashion trend, or examples of movies/literature with gothic themes, or what? I know I'm probably making this a lot more difficult than it really is, but I'm just not sure exactly where she was going with the question.

Goth isn't emo.. the majority of us hate the new crowd that calls themselves emo, very few of them live up to the actual emo trend of the nineties, now they all jsut think it's cool to act depressed.

Anyways.

Gothic today is jsut as it was then, the culture has a strong sense of individuality and uniqueness to it. There are of course the fashion trend, but that's a direct result of wanting the be different. Alot of gothic literature today is heavily laden with Satire and more 'sophisticated' and dark humor.
