The aurora (Northern Lights) is most active late at night or early in the morning, when the sky is clear and the air is chilly. The best time to watch is in the spring and fall, especially during the months of February, March, September, and October.

There is an "aurora oval" anywhere above 60 degrees north latitude so the best place to see them is in Fairbanks, Alaska, which is at 65 degrees. There are other places further north where you can view them...but they are harder to get to and they don't offer a lot of accommodations.
