Question:

Hey can anybody describe this? This is an extract from a story.I can't understand it especially"night gas leak

Exactly at eight Hickey-Mooney of vaudeville team in the flat across the half would yield to the gentle influence of derilium tremens and begin to overturn chairs under the delusion that Hammerstein was pursuing them with a five hundred dollar a week contract. Then the gent at the window across the air shaft would get out his flute;the nightly gas leak would steal forth to frolic in the highways;the dumbwaiter would slip off its trolley and the evening routine of the Frogmore flats would be under way.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

It is depicting what an ordinary night is like in the flats at Frogmore. The author makes use of "creative" words or flowery words to describe simple things. i.e. instead of saying: Hickey Mooney had seizures or body twitch, the author used "delirium tremens" ; instead of saying: "The nightly smell of gas spread up to the highways", the author said : " nightly gas leak would steal forth to frolic in the highways." It is the prerogative of the author to make his words as "colorful" as he wants them to be.

This is the basic meaning of the paragraph:
At 8 o' clock , HIckey - Mooney had a seizure and he overturned chairs because he is delusionary. Simultaneously, a gentleman then plays a flute. Then the smell of gas coming from a leak (which happens every night), would spread into the highways. A waiter is seen pushing a cart and so the night begins at Frogmore.

I hope this will help you.
