He stumbled along the dusty road
With his cat held under his arm.
His weary gaze saw a driveway
That led to a beautiful farm.
He turned and walked towards it
His eyes now focused with hope,
"Missy, I think we've found you a home,"
He said, trudging up the slope.
He gently rapped on the old back door
With his hat in his hand, standing tall.
And after a minute a lady appeared,
And said, "Can I help y-all?"
"M'am, I'm just a fella who's down on his luck,
But it ain't the fault of my cat.
Would you give her a home, she's a mouser for sure,
A farm might use her for that."
The woman was kind, she invited him in,
And fed both him and his pet.
But after a while, he thanked her and stood,
Saying, "It's lucky for Missy we met."
"My time's almost up, I can feel the end's near,
No, I really don't mind moving on.
But she's got some years, and needs people who care,
She'll forget me soon after I'm gone."
The farmlady watched as he shuffled away,
And she stroked little Missy with love,
"God bless you," she whispered, and raised up her eyes,
Praying mercy for him from above.
