Yes, wasteful expenditures on marriage should be checked but that all depends on the bride and grooms situation. If they can afford it and want to splurge - it's their choice. But to have extravagant wedding and put it on credit cards or ask parents (who are also struggling) just to show off to family and friends would be a disaster. I would rather attend a small gathering with close family and friends that both groom and bride have a chance to sit and talk with all the attendees than having a grand wedding that guest would not be able to congratulate the bride and groom or vise versa.
