No, I don't believe that's the case. I think the work speaks for itself, quite honestly. A lesser novel would be remembered for the controversy it stirred, but not much else...Ulysses is one of the greatest novels ever written. It's an amazing tour de force thats boldness is only matched by its literary importance.
