How would I go about writting a novel?

I am planning on writting a story, a long novel for my girlfriend, and giving it to her on christmas, yet, I have no clue how to organize such a large writting, I am used to Poetry, and short stories, can someone give me some pointers?

You need to be methodical, if you are serious about writing. Don't think how long the novel must be, but write each day at least five pages, even if you think it is bad writing, do it anyway, the next day re-read it and edit it, you will have fresh ideas. Good Luck.
