The narrator is the tool that the writer use to tell the story. Depending who narrate the story and what kind of narrator it is, is the relationship with the characters. If is one of the character who narrate, the writer use it to express that character point of view. If is an omniscient narrator (the one who knows even what the character does not know about themselves) the writer can "play" in all directions with the story.
