You could do today's political climate (the destruction of war - both past and present - is always good. I had a friend who did a perspex box full of bits of paintings and toy soldiers like Jake and Dinos Chapman). Pop art is always a good one to link to anything "of the time" (culture/society/satire/politi... etc). But don't go down the Andy Warhol route - far too overused!
A further idea is to take random, gritty polaroid pictures when you're out with your friends at a gig/drinking/clubbing and being indulgent, and do a section on decadence (look at the photography of Amanda de Cadenet and Nan Goldin, also Stella Vine, the former stripper/painter). Do your research and look at their work! It's easy and fun (you don't really have to work too hard) and you could create a cool collage, scribble on the polaroids and do paintings etc. to go with it - a sketchpad maybe of random things you've done of your friends whilst out, like a superficial, bohemian lifestyle thing. You could use it all to contrast with and further highlight the serious issues of today, suffering, war etc, that you would have dealt with previously. I reckon doing something like that would be more off the wall and get you top grades (most people do Andy Warhol I seem to remember). Plus, you'd be using all types of different mediums (sculpture, painting, drawing, photography) so it'd give you a broad range.
Hope this all helps - I got an A* for GCSE art all that time ago!
