Question:

Theme of this poem?

E.J. Pratt - Erosion

It took the sea a thousand years,
A thousand years to trace
The granite features of this cliff,
In crag and scarp and base.

It took the sea an hour one night,
An hour of storm to place
The sculpture of these granite seams
Upon a woman's face.

I think this poem is about loss, the kind of loss the etches itself into your very being so that others who see you recognize the pain experienced.

Based on the references to the sea, I suspect the woman lost a loved one at sea during a great storm. Forevermore, she will carry the marks of her grief eroded into her face.
