Question:

Is it possible to teach someone how to write good music?

I was in a band for 5 years. Near the end of our run, when talk of calling it quits arose, one of the members suggested that if we were to all take lessons we would be a better band because of it. I didn't completely disagree but my argument was that lessons wouldn't teach us creativity, or the ability to write good music. It's something you're born with or learn very young, and that the ability to write complicated pieces of music doesn't necessarily mean it will be good music. Part of what makes great music what it is, is the Idea behind it, not just the complexity of it. If you're creative enough you can write good, simple, music.

What is your opinion on this matter? I'd like to get other perspectives.

Not quite. As a musician I can tell you that talent cannot be taught... it can be refined through practice and studies, but not acquired. Composing music isn't just for the brave - you can learn it, but your creativity is what sets your boundaries. You will not be able to evolve beyond them. Creativity is what, like you said, you're born with.

Lessons (from a good teacher) may open a whole new world for you, the experience may help you to better realize where you're going with your music. But you may also come to realize that the solution to your problem can come from outside...

You can add a 6th musician to your band that will write the music/lyrics for you. Given, of course, his/her taste is to your liking. :)
