Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

Avantgarde - Music that is fresh and new, usually experimental.

Grunge - Nirvana is the band most associated with this, listen to their music and you'll get a sense of the genre.

Industrial - Is a blend of electronic and rock music. Bands such as Zeromancer, Skinny Puppy, and Deadstar Assembly would be examples of Industrial music.

Jungle - This is a specific genre of electronic/techno music. I believe it has more bass (correct me if I'm wrong)!

Punk - Started as a musical movement for rebellion I believe. Bubblegum punk (Mainstream/Pop-Punk) would be bands such as Good Charlotte or Simple Plan. If you ehar them then you should get a sense of the genre, though it would be much lighter than the average punk rock music.

Progressive - I usually hear this with Progressive Metal which includes bands such as Opeth or Dream Theater.

Rave - Electronic music that's usually very carefree and fun. Try Scott Brown, DJ Tiesto, or DJ Hixxy for examples.

Ska - The ska bands I hear have a blend of reggae music and rock music. They usually don't have that loud electric guitar sound that other rock bands would.

Techno - Electronic music. Listen to DJ Tiesto, Scooter, or Daft Punk.

Trance - This is also electonic music. It is usually much less energetic and has a dreamy quality to it. Infected Mushroom is a great example for this type of music.
