Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

Consider the following:

- Is this something you would love living with?

- Is this a reputable gallery?

- Oftentimes, one can Google the artist and research their show history, work value and other interesting factors that may steer you one way or another on purchasing the piece.

- Buy the Nov. issue of Vanity Fair (the one with Brad Pitt on the cover). This issue is one of the most insightful and informative readings on the contemporary art world. You will find a lot of advice from reputable dealers on purchasing works of art.

- Right now there is a huge boom in the art world which means that the prices are definitely on the rise. If you look at art as an investment, you can't go wrong.

- Becoming an art collector is an exciting and enriching prospect that benefits both collector and community.

-Another bonus to buying work from a living artist is the possibility of a fun evening! Often collectors invite the artist to see where the piece will be hung and from there a relationship between artist and patron can develop.

Enjoy!
