Try going to the bookstore and checking out the knitting magazines. Interweave Knits is my favorite, their patterns are a little more bohemian than some of the others, but Vogue Knitting sometimes has good stuff in it, and so does Knitter's magazine. All the magazines have advertising sections in the back too that have websites for various yarn companies and such that sometimes offer a free pattern or two.
