Question:

What are the giant Sphinx-like statues called that you see when going through the Suez Canal? Artist/Date?

I went through the Suez Canal on the U.S.S Yosemite AD-19 in 1985 (?) And I remember that there were amazing stone monuments at points along the banks. One was a large sphinx-like woman and others were more monolithic. Any ideas?
