I think it would depend on your meaning of merit and understanding. I believe that the value of the artists expression is to create an explanation or understanding of something inside themselves or inside their world to share with with the rest of us. To hope that other people will always or usually understand is rather unrealistic. I think that the best an artist can hope for is that he or she will come to a better understanding and share it with the rest of us.

As for the merit of art itself, what are we as human beings without it. It takes an insane individual to reach down painfully into their self, drag out a piece of themselves, and stick it into the bright lights for everyone to see...and judge. But how could we as a species develop our collective soul and sense of humanity if some people didn't find the need to do it.
