They are from different countries, so my question is, how should the letter writing begin? Not the content of the letters, I have that figured out, but how should the whole thing begin without them actually coming face to face before the letter writing starts? You know when the first immigrants came to this country, many of the men came first and they came as young boys really, 16 and 17 years old.. They came here and worked hard, and when many of them had a little money saved they would head back to their home-countries, marry a young girl from their village and return to America to raise their family with their new bride. Sometimes these young men left for the old country with a young lady already in mind to marry. Often times it was a young lady he had known and loved in the old-country and when he arrived here he corresponded with her through letter-writing, sometimes for years til the day he returned back to the village to marry her. These letter would go on for months, years til he was ready to go back home and marry her. These young men would very often meet the young woman in question through family and friends here or family and friends on the other side. Sometimes the letter writing began to a young girl he remembers leaving in the old village as a young child, With the passing of years, he remembers her and writes to her knowing that as a young lady, she would be of marriageable age when he returns.. He would write to her and correspond with her for years and many times all they knew of each other was of a time when they were children before he left the village for America |
