The consciousness of people in those times was significantly different than ours. Their focus was on the here-after, heaven, what happens after you die. So, for them, what was best and most perfect was religion and religious themes. And all the major arts of that time reflect religious themes. Life on earth was far less important that life, hopefully in heaven.

But, in Italy, in about the year 1500 a shift began to take place. It took 2 to 3 hundred years more for poets and authors to make the conditions of man the focus of great art.
