Question:

Opening an art gallery...?

I am from a moderatly small town in Northern Arkansas. I am currently getting my degree in Art History. I want to open an art gallery in my home town... its always been a goal to bring some culture into that area lol.

Well... I guess my question is whether its a realistic goal. I'm not even sure If I would be able to make a worthwhile profit...I am by no means from wealth. I just don't know how long it would take to create enough profit to pay off all the loans that i would need to create the gallery.

Yes, it's a dream that can be turned into reality. It's up to you to make your goal "realistic" or not.

You want to open a gallery, then simply stick to the idea. If it hasn't happened before, then no problem. Always a first time for a town to have an art gallery. In fact, by bringing something unique to the town, you have better chances to grow in a non-competitive environment.

The question you should ask is not whether your dream can become real, but how can you make it real?

What are your ideas?
What are your resources?
What are your strengths?
What kind of artists and art can become available to you?
What kind of set-up can you have within your budget?
Will you have to educate your local residents first?
What kinds of challenges can you face and how to overcome them?

I feel that you should keep things simple for yourself, and not worry too much about any certain type of space or gallery. Perhaps your neighbors will be happier in a more friendly space.

You best route is to start with educational programs - teach locals about art and art appreciation. You can make some money in the process, and gradually build a set-up. Also sell small items and stuff... really bring art to people's home.

I suggest you closely examine the interest in craft, as well as "affordable art." You should also keep your eyes open to local talent which needs exposure and your help. There's a reason why God put you in a place where you are needed!

Also research by talking to people and other means on what kind of art will be well-received? I feel that in your town, you should bring out the local artists, involve creative souls, and have a more participatory approach. Any elitist art might impress people, but get you no love.

Get love and support and cheers from your people, and they will help you.

Why can't you have a gallery? Absolutely!

Good luck, and don't be let down by the many, many challenges that will test you.
