Question:

Cutting top off glass bottle?

I have an empty 3 litre Crown Royal bottle (flat sided) that I would like to use as a betta bowl. I will have to cut off the top to make it accessible for cleaning, feeding, etc. The part I will need to cut across is quite thick and not smooth. Is there a relatively easy and user-friendly way to do this? Please let me know...

Cutting any glass can be done by scoring the glass with carbide steel or diamond, then tapping the scored area while applying pressure. This may be difficult with an irregular surface like the one you describe. There is another method that works by wrapping nickel chromium wire around the bottle exactly at the proposed cut. Then hook the wire up to a 110 volt power source for just 1/2 a second. The wire will glow and fall apart, after which you dunk it in cool water. It usually snaps apart right at the wire.
