Question:

What does the K stand for in Mozarts piano concerto in G Major, K. 453?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

The K numbers are catalog numbers for Mozart's work, but the K doesn't stand for catalogue, but rather the Kochel (there's an umlaut on the o) catalog. Ludwig Kochel was a man of manyu talents, writer, composer, botanist, publisher, and student of law. He loved Mozart's music and seeing that there was no complete or accurate catalog of his compositions, took it upon himself to create one. The first edition was published in 1862; the most recent major revision was the sixth edition, with corrections and additions, edited by Franz Giegling and assiciates and published in 1964. The latest is the eighth.

The numbers are in the order in which it was believed that Mozart composed the works, but recent scholarship has altered the order, creating a confusion of both original and revised K numbers, some with appended letters for pieces that were found to have come between others.
