While I'm taking the term's use from Eliot, I like to apply it to early Feminist Gothic tales, like The Castles of Athlyn and Dunbayne. There is something that occurs psychologically when a woman is frightened or excited, but words, at the time, were deemed inadequate to explain this sensory phenomenon. So women fainted. The fainting was an objective correlative. Readers everywhere knew that meant inexpressible extreme emotion. In the modern era, if a woman kept fainting, we'd think she was sick and needed medical attention, hahaha,
