What it simply means is that African art has messages that can be told like a story. A piece of sculpture may have an entire story of a family or it may relate to life in a particular village, town or in some cases cities.

African paintings are somewhat similar, but may be rendered differently because the artist may emphasize a particular color to describe an event or a significant event such as; a wedding, a burial ritual, crop harvesting, ect. With this in mind, the use of descriptive messages can be related.
