Question: Does anyone else feel they lack good vocabulary when writing!?
Whenever I am writing, I try to describe something but I often find myself wondering what word to use to describe what I picture in my head!. It is very frustrating that I can't figure out words to let the reader know what is meant to be seen and felt!. It isn't that I lack vocabulary skills all together, but I wondered if anyone else is frustrated with this problem as I am!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all, don't worry too much about this!. You must know that no writer, no matter how how renowned he/she is, simply sits down and writes perfect beautiful literature!. People usually start with a first draft and write it quickly, bad vocab and all!. Then they go over it slowly, with a dictionary in hand, and clean it up!.

If you want to improve your vocabulary the best thing to do is to read a lot, as you probably do, and make sure it is books with really decent grammar!. This is where classics, like Jane Austen novels, might be your best option!. Then, while you read, be sure not to skip over a single word you don't know!. When you see it, reach for the dictionary, and then memorise it's meaning!.

And yes, as Eric says, a thesaurus is a wonderful thing to help you come up with better words while writing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, i have the same problem!. When writing i tend to have a thesaurus nearby to use when i get stuck with a word i can't seem to get my hand on!. Once you see the word around others which you already know the meaning of then you are more likely to remember it in the future!. As bad as my memory is; after seeing a word and then using it in my own constructed sentence i tend to remember it more easily!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am an old man and still consider my vocabulary limited!. I have been working crosswords for about five years and it has helped considerably!. I am a sophomore in college and get frustrated each time I write a paper, but am gradually improving!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I often have that problem too, I know exactly how you feel!. My solution is to always keep a thesaurus at hand!. My word processor has one built in, and let me tell you, it is a lifesaver!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
