Question: Is there any other bestselling novel which contains !. !. !. !?
such absolutely, sleep-inducingly dull dialog and overuse of adverbs, as well as multiple ways of saying "he said/she said," as Stephenie Meyer's Twilight contains!?

Examples (all from a single page!)

"Just in time," he crowed!.
"Shoot," I muttered, when the paper sliced my finger!.
"No," Edward roared!.

Crowing, muttering and roaring all on a single page! My goodness!.

More random examples:

"Not a dime," he said virtuously
"We are speaking of a hypothetical case," I reminded him frostily!.
"I got lost," I admitted sheepishly!.
"Yeah," a voice called loudly from behind me!.
"No trail!?" I asked desperately!.

Virtuously, frostily, sheepishly, loudly, desperately, Holy Crikey! !. !. !. A good writer RARELY uses adverbs to describe the way a line of dialog is spoken!. The dialog itself and the context should be enough for the reader to understand the tone of the speaker!. But I suppose when your dialog consists mainly of one, two, and three word phrases (No, Yeah, Just in time,) you need adverbs!. !. !. lolWww@QuestionHome@Com

oh my!.!. oh my!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with Laura and Sam!.

I read somewhere (I think in an excerpt of Strunk and White's Elements of Style) that "said" is the word you should use, above all other crowings and sheepishnesses and desperatelys!. It goes along with the point that when writing, you're supposed to show!. Not tell!.

But of course, Meyer understands nothing about writing!. It's so frustrating when people think that all there is to a book is the story!. What happens is all they care about, not how well written it is or character development or anything!.

UGH!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't pay attention!. Any body can go to some fancy *** school and learn to write perfectly and up to everyone's standards!. For me it's more of a the plot, and the story itself!. I do agree with you that she could use a little less adverbs!.!.!. I mean sometimes it adds to the dialogue but I admit she's a bit repetitive!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I didnt know the Twilight books were like that!.

Maybe its a good thing, the young girls will learn lots of big words all in one sitting!. Think of it as a cramming for a vocabulary test!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

thats why i didnt even get past like the fourth chapter!. i dont even care how many thumbs down i get from all those crazy twilight fans on y!a, those books are not good at all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Big Chief, I agree with you!. But look at the bright side!. At least some of these kids are inspired to read!. (she suggested sympathetically!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

OOo, oo! How about at LEAST one dash on every single page!. I've even flipped to random pages to show my friends how ridiculous it is and I've never been let down!. No one can finish a sentence in those stupid books!Www@QuestionHome@Com
