If it is relevant to the story, (advances the plot, shows character development, etc!.) it needs to be included!. If it is just there for shock value because you think readers want one, then a good editor will pull it out anyway!. Once you have determined whether it needs to be there, you need to consider very carefully HOW you write it!. Depending on who your audience is (teens!? adults!?) and your purpose (see above) you will want different details!. Example of an award winning first book BASED on sex, but with hardly any graphic detail: Story of a Girl, by Sara Zarr!. Example of a book with a sex scene with almost no detail, lasting less than 2 paragraphs, but necessary to show one character's control over another: Painting Caitlyn, by Kimberly Joy Peters (yep - that's me)!.
