What about A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess- it's better than the film and experimental in its use of language!. It's also pretty dark!.
If you like Haruki Murakami try The Wind up Bird Chronicle- I'm in the middle of it myself and am loving it but can't figure out where it's going! Bonkers!
