How does the novel The Jungle succeed and fail as propaganda for the socialist movement!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Socialist!?

I guess if you call forcing companies to follow basic laws of hygiene and sanitation "socialist," then yes The Jungle was "socialist!." But this also makes Teddy Roosevelt a "socialist!."

Generally, Sinclair is considered as part of the Progressive movement and the formation of "muckraker" journalism!. But Progressivism was largely a middle-class, urban movement that promoted a new idea of "the public" and "public responsibility!. This included the Womens Christian Temperance Movement, for example!. It also advocated clean and safe living and working conditions for the swelling numbers of poor and often immigrant workers in the growing, industrializing US cities!. Work injuries, sanitation, exploitation, and contagious diseases were serious problems!.

The Jungle succeeded because it opened a lot of eyes to the plight of exploited immigrant labor -- because in a "free market" the capitalists can treat the workers however they want b/c the police have their backs -- and the filthy conditions of Chicago's meat-packing industry!. It lead to The Pure Food and Drug Act!.

I can be considered a failure because, to this day, the meat-packing industry in the United States doesn't look that much different from the early 1900s !. !. !. because people keep using the work "socialist" to scare us out of using our own government for our own protection!. also, the meat-packing issue drew attention away from the urban/domestic issues the book raised!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The reason Upton was disappointed by the reaction to the book is because he wrote it to draw attention to the fact that it was nearly impossible to keep a family going in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century, when in fact it drew more attention to the grotesque standards that the meat packing company was to abide by!.

Overall, a very depressing book but hardly a dull moment!. I only recommend it if you like a solid heavy read!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
