we want the books to be big (not at first) but we don't know how!

The very first thing you need to do is to make sure that you finish what you are writing about!. When you're done with your manuscript, you're ready to get published!.

Discover your readers
Dedicate time for writing

Designate a professional editor
Deal with a professional publisher
Distribute the book effectively

I suggest that you self-publish if you want to get published immediately!. You don't have to go through the hassle of having your manuscript edited and approved!. In self-publishing, you have full-control of your story!.

First thing to do is write the first book, outline the plot for the sequels, and make sure you have established your characters and your story line!. Then go to the library and get a book called 'Writer's Markets'!. It lists 20,000 publishers and tells you what specifically each wants, and how to approach them!.
You mention 'me and my mate' which makes me think that you may be from England or Australia!. There is probably a similar book there - just ask your librarian for help!.
