Question: Twilight Role Models!?
This is just going off of an earlier question I asked for my English class and I believe I will use this as well!.
MANY Bella/Edward answers showed up and I'm curious: Are they good or bad role models!? Would you approve of your daughter marrying and having a child at 18!? Do you think it is wrong of Bella to want to carry a child even though it is clearly killing her!? Is it healthy for Bella to be thinking about Edward so often and dedicating her life to him!? Is she an anti-feminist character!? Is Edward too stalker-ish!? Does he seem too controlling!? Does he seem like someone you would want to date!?
You don't have to those specific questions, but opinions on the characters would be greatly appreciated, but PLEASE give reasons!. No "Edward is a good role model because he's awesome"!.

I think the characters are negative role models!. Bella spends most of her time obsessing over Edward, lying to her parents, and doing things I would never approve of any person doing!.
I would strongly disapprove of my child marrying at 18 and starting a family!. My grandmother tried that and it ended disastrously for her!. 18 is so young, too young really, to be thinking about marriage!. When you are 18 you barely know anything outside of your home town!. You have never really experienced life at that point, only school and a part time job!.
I am not one to tell a woman what she should and shouldn't do with her body, If Bella wants that child then it is not up to me to stop her!. My only qaurrwl with this is what good is she to her child if it is killed her!? If she died the child died as well!. My opinion is that if Bella wanted to keep the child that's fine but I would have chosen differently!.
Bella is far to obsessed with Edward!. Everything she does she does for Edward!. Her life revolves around Edward in such an unhealthy and unromantic fashion!. She has no independent thoughts, feelings or ideas!. Edward's beliefs become her beliefs; Edward's ideas become her ideas, what Edward wants Bella wants!. Meyer even went so far to say she was like a satellite circling Edward and that's just wrong!. Relationships like that tend to be very unhealthy!. She has known this boy for less than a month and he becomes her whole world and that's just wrong!.
Yes Bella is anti-feminist!. She lets Edward control her like a puppet in the first book!. Then in the second book when Edward leaves her life becomes worthless!. She no longer sees herself or anyone else as valuable!. She knew Edward for 6 months, I have dated boys longer than that and I didn't feel worthless when we broke up!. Yes it hurt my feelings and I felt miserable for a week or so but I moved on like most people do!. Bella measures her self worth by whether or not Edward and Jacob are attracted to her!. The only time she sees herself as worth while is when she becomes a vampires!. When she is human she constantly talks about how much better Edward is that her and how she is so unworthy of him!. The worst about this is that the author confirms it by making Edward better than Bella!. She literally makes him so that he is stronger, better, faster, more rich and just all around better than Bella!.
Yes Edward is very controlling!. Edward controls everything, he makes all of Bella's decisions, when she makes a decision he disagrees with he will go behind her back and does it anyway!. He uses sex to get Bella to agree to marriage!. She didn't want to get married but Edward says that's the only way he will have sex so she agrees!. Then there is the whole college thing!. He agrees to have sex with her if she will go to college!. The worst part though was the pregnancy!. Now I said I would have chosen differently than Bella but I was absolutely appalled when Edward offered Jacob a chance to have sex with Bella is he killed the baby!. I was absolutely disgusted by that!. That was just sickening and Meyer should be ashamed of herself for even suggesting that!.
So like I said, I think the characters are horrible role models for children!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
Twilight is set up in a world of fantasy and no person will ever be in the same situation that Bella was in or deal with the same circumstances!. Getting married at eighteen in real life is not a good idea at all, but Bella was in different circumstances!. She was completely in love with someone who would stay the same age forever and she couldn't grow older!.
But I don't really agree with what Bella did!. She was much too dedicated to Edward!. She is a weak character and a Mary Sue!. Edward is controlling and in real life a girl would have gotten a restraining order!. But again it is escapist fantasy and you should never take anything out of twilight and try to compare it to real life!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
Well, if you're talking about the actors in the movie then Gosh No! Kristen's a pothead, and Rob's an alcoholic!. As for the characters in the books though, I would say that They are good role model's for the most part!. I think Bella should have carried the child like she did!. It would be wrong if she didn't!.!.!.not to get into the whole abortion non abortion thing here!. ANway, I wouldn't midn my daughter marrying and having a kid that long if she was with someone like Edward who would love her unconditionally forever!.so ya!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
Bella is a good role model because it describes that she was pretty average, getting good grades and never having any boyfriends!. It's totally normal for a girl like her to go crazy after getting a guy like Edward!. As for Edward, you would need a vampire's point of view!. ;)Www@QuestionHome@Com
if u think about those you pretty much know the answers but its just a book dont get too serious about it people obsessing too much over it is why stephenie isnt writing them she said shed write it when the craze dies down so she wont be pressured to write itWww@QuestionHome@Com

One thing you have to understand is that Twilight is fiction!. I mean come on, if this was real!.!.!.if someone randomly climbed through my window!.!.i would be the proud owner of a gun!. :-P

-I don't think they are exceptional role models like Mother Teresa or Ghandi, but I don't think they are completely bad!. I believe that Edward caring about Bella's feelings rather than ignoring them speaks a great deal to the younger generation of men!. Haven't we all asked ourselve, "why doesn't he care!?" Bella is also a pretty good role model; she studies very hard, is a vegetarian, and doesn't really get into trouble!.
#2 If I had a child and she wanted to get married and have a child at 18 I would ask this question!. "Why and are you able to take care of the child!." I know that the world is not like fiction, if my daughter was financially stable and the guy was willing to be an active participant in the child's life!. Then yes I would approve!.
#3 Do I think it is wrong of Bella to carry a child even though its killing her!. You know I remember another book that something similar to this happens; Gone With The Wind!. This question is one that has been linked to the pro-life/pro-choice debate!. I myself am pro-life!. If the mother has decided that she wants to try and have the baby, no one on earth has the power to tell her she can't!.
#4 Is it healthy for Bella to be thinking of Edward this much!. In reality,No it's not!. In reality we would be calling this an intense infatuation!. In Twilight it is extremely played up because vampire's emotions are supposed to be so more extreme!. (and come on, have you ever met a teenager who was not also extreme with their emotions!?)
#5 Is Bella anti-feminist!. Parts of her yes; at times Meyer did make her seem like she can't take care of herself!. However if you look at other females in the book, you can tell that Meyer did not try to make women look weak in this book!.
#6 Is Edward Stalkerish!.!. DUH!!! Come on, if some guy told you that he followed you to another city; would you not get a little weirded out!? True, in the book he is attempting to keep her safe, but yeah that is too weird!. I'll also include the next question, is he controlling!.!.yes! He wants to keep her safe, but if this was the REAL world then he would be labeled and a possessive and controlling guy!.
#7 Would I date him!? If i relied strictly on looks then yes I would, but other than that!.!.!.no!.
The thing is, this is fiction!. I know you are not taking it seriously, i am speaking in regards to all the little teens out there who are obsessed with it!. I love these books but they are not my life!. I am not on the hunt for an "Edward Cullen!." However, all the little quirks that people find in this book are merely integral parts of the story and character traits!. That's how they were written!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
As all books it has it's pros and cons!.
Pros about characters:
Bella: She doesn't care about being popular or having friends!. She loves Edward with her heart and is willing to die for him!. ( it shows that girls shouldn't try to be "normal" like their friends they have to find them selves and be who they are)
Edward: He's a vampire and make a choice of not killing humans!. He also doesn't want to have sex until they are marriage!. (it's shows that even though you are mean to be bad, you can change that!. and to wait until marriage)
Alice: she is in control of her temper!. She never gets mad and even in the most anger moments she is relax!. She is a loyal friend to bella!. it's shows to don't get mad that easy and self control)
The cullen family!. (show family values as protecting each other and accepting when some one falls in love with one that is not their kind)
and there are more but i have no time to keep going
Cons:
Bella: was pathetic when edward left and was playing with another boy, and at the end broke jacob heart
Edward; agree he is too controlling over her
also her parents seem don't care about what she does!. When her that grown her she ignores it in away(she keep seeing edward on her bedroom) Her mom is always away and her dad watching tv!.

I think its okay!. Edwards good for her!. He's protective but not controlling!. I think its a little selfish of her to carry a baby that's killing her especially when so many other people are involved; Edward, Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper, Jacob, Charlie, Renee, Phill etc!. Its probably a little worrying if you were as obsessed with someone as Bella clearly is with Edward!. But they are ready to commit and spend forever with each other!.!.!.
I think there good role models apart from the whole grand theft auto thing!.
I thiink its kind of wrong that Edward justifies killing people because they are all ready murderers!. Its still wrong to kill them!. It also slightly strange that through the books they have such a relaxed attitude towards killing!.
