Question: Is "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman appropriate for my middle schooler!?
My son is 11 and in 5th grade!. He has started to read Coraline and is really enjoying it!. He wants to read Neverwhere but I'm not sure if it's appropriate!. (I've never read it) And if it is appropriate for an 11 year old, then are all of his books geared toward that age group!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

11 years old might be a little too young!.!.!. I'd be more comfortable with a 12 or 13 year old reading it, but if your son is mature enough and has already been exposed to popular culture then he might be okay!.

Neverwhere is a great story, but there are some gory and violent scenes that might not be appropriate for someone his age!. There are two characters in the story who kill and torture other characters, which is my main concern for such a young reader!. Perhaps you should try reading it yourself and see if you think it's okay for your son!.

Stardust might also be a fun read for your son, but there is a mild sex scene early on in the book!.

ADD: Good Omens is also another great book by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett that your son might enjoy!. I think there might be mild swearing once or twice in the book, but the story and characters are amazing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with Bod; Neverwhere is a wonderful book, but it contains themes of loss, torture, darkness, and more mature elements that aren't appropriate for 11 year olds!. The book is also about a deeper contemplation of one's place in the world, one's meaning, and the concept of the various levels of consciousness!. It is also set in England, so if your child is not familiar with some terminology it would be more confusing and difficult than fun to read!. Wait a few years and then suggest it!. :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Depends on the maturity of your kid!.

Try searching the book on wiki to see what it's about and such!.
Wiki usually has descriptions on the plot and everything!. only you can determine if your kid is able to read it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am not sure, but most of Neil Gaiman's work is geared towards adults rather than children!. Read a summary of it, and decide for yourself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's very dark!. And his books are aimed at adults!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
