Question: What book illustrations have stuck in your mind, either recently or from childhood!?
I loved it when books had colour plates in them!.!.if they had a layer of what looks like tracing paper over the top as well!.!.!.!.*sigh*

I also loved 'Look& Learn' history text books from school!. It was all Vikings with very satisfying blond plaits and comedy Viking helmets ;-)

The 1950's Narnia books illustrated by Pauline Baynes were gorgeous !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I had a big fat children′s encyclopedia that I loved aged about 5 or 6!.
I loved loads of the illustrations!. Especially a drawing of Burke and Hare robbing graves, another of some explorers lost in the Australian outback and a drawing of Michaelangelo′s David!. I remember gazing at that one and asking my mum why a pigeon had nested between his legs!.

I have a bible, given to me as a Christening present in 1970!. It has the most beautiful illustrations!. Although, i am not religous, i always marvelled at the pictures!.
also R B Bunnets, Geography in Diagrams!. Lol!. I still have a copy!. It takes me back!. I was put in the top Geography set at school, by a very kind teacher, who told me if i worked at it, i could get a good mark!.
I didn`t revise, and had the shame, of getting ungraded in the O`Level!. :) The teacher shunned me at the certificates evening!. My cheeks still burn red at the thought of it!. :(!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From childhood!? More than anything, the magical illustrations from the Grey Rabbit stories!.

And later on, Tolkien's maps and illustrations, and I think also many of the later paintings and drawings used in his works!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Quentin Blake's illustrations for the Roald Dahl books stick out for me too!. The quirky drawing style suited the books so well!. I used to love drawing as a kid and I remember spending hours copying all of the pictures from the Matilda book! Www@QuestionHome@Com

I once went to the Bronte museum in Haworth which is really the vicarage where they all grew up!. There you can see little books that they made as children, the writings and drawings are lovely and childlike but still shows talent,

I was really impressed at the time ---- having been a childhood drawer and painter myself --- just how good they were!.

My own Heidi book from 1949 has lovely pictures inside!. I adored those pictures as I read the book as a little girl!. It was from Woolworth's too, so maybe it will become a collectors item now!!!
Antiques Roadshow here we come me and Heidi!!!

But first I have to get my daughter to give it back to me!. LOL
